What is a Rigger?
A Rigger is the one who performs the tying – the person holding the rope, designing the poses, controlling the pressure, and ensuring the safety of their partner.
A Rigger is not just a “knotter.” They are primarily responsible for the technique, for the feelings of the Rope bunny, and for the safe space of the entire session. A good Rigger not only knows how to tie beautifully but also knows how to listen to their partner's body, read their breath, facial expressions, and the smallest signals.
To me, a Rigger is like an artist who is both creative and protective. They create a frame, but that frame only makes sense when the person inside feels supported, not imprisoned. A good Rigger always prioritizes safety and consent over aesthetic beauty.
What is a Rope bunny?
A Rope bunny (also known as a rope bottom) is the one being tied – the person receiving the ropes, experiencing sensations, and allowing themselves to enter a state of surrender.
A rope bunny is not a “passive” person in a negative sense. On the contrary, they are actively giving up control, actively opening up, and actively feeling. Many rope bunnies share that when tied correctly, they feel safer, more embraced, and even reach a deep state of relaxation called rope space – a place where the mind is freed from daily wandering thoughts.
The relationship between the rigger and the rope bunny
These two roles do not exist separately. They form a continuous dialogue:
