7 Types of Dominants in BDSM
Mistress Elena

In the world of BDSM, the role of the Dominant (abbreviated as Dom) is to take on the role of control, guidance, and often be proactive in sexual activities or power exchange. However, this role is not just about commanding or dominating — it also involves responsibility, understanding, and the ability to create a sense of safety for the Submissive (abbreviated as Sub).

Not everyone dominates in the same way. This article will introduce 7 types of Dominants in BDSM for you to explore yourself or to better understand your partner.

1. Caregiver Dom

What is a Caregiver Dom?

Also known asDaddy, Mommy, typically takes care ofLittle(the one playing the role of a child or baby in the relationship).

The Caregiver is a type of Dom associated with nurturing, caring, and support. The relationship with the sub, also known as little, often involves pampering and protection — not just in the bedroom but also in everyday life. Of course, there will still be punishment, discipline, and rules as a caregiver would set for their child.

For example:

  • Setting a bedtime, teaching the little how to take care of themselves.
  • Punish the little one when they misbehave and don't listen because they are too busy playing.
  • Indulge and pamper the little one.

2. Predator - Primal Dom

What is a Predator - Primal Dom?

Primal Doms focus on primal instincts, raw emotions, and the animalistic nature of humans. Their play style is wild, natural, and connects body to body. Primal Play can be referred to as the game of "Hunter" and "Prey."

Also known asPrimal DomorPredator, typically hunts Primal Subs or Prey.

Characteristics:

  • Pursuing the feeling of "hunting," seeking out the "prey."
  • The Predator can role-play or draw inspiration from carnivorous animals like Lions or Leopards, may growl, use teeth, lightly scratch, and exert physical control.
  • There is no need to use formal language or a master-slave relationship.
  • In addition to the feelings of dominance and submission, the Predator also aims for the feeling of the other party "yielding," being completely subdued by them.

For example:

  • One person is the Hunter, and the other is the Prey - the two can chase each other, and when the sub is caught, they will have to endure the "devouring" of the Hunter.
  • Both can be Hunters, struggling for dominance.
  • And in relationships with more than one person, there may be one predator and the others as prey, and vice versa.

Note:

Always ensure safety and consent before each play session. In particular, there MUST be a safeword to ensure that limits are not exceeded.

3. Rigger

What is a Rigger?

Known asRigger, Rope Top, Rope Dom, usually plays withRope Bunny, Rope BottomorRope Sub. If a Rigger also enjoys being tied and switches roles to Bunny, they are called aRope Switch

A Rope Rigger is a Dom specialized in rope – particularly in rope play. For them, BDSM is an art, and the sub's body is a "work of art"; the rope becomes an effective tool to bind and restrict the sub's movement.

Characteristics

  • Skilled in tying techniques, often learning Shibari or Kinbaku
  • Focuses on absolute safety when using rope
  • Loves to control the partner's body through restraint

For example:

  • A Rigger may tie purely for art (Shibari), creating a purely aesthetic and complex tying piece.
  • Can be used as a form of punishment: Tying tightly to a bed frame or chair, tying with a vibrator...
  • Can play with rope from the start - Bondage.

Note:

  • Rope tying requires good technique and anatomical knowledge - tying too tightly or incorrectly can easily cause numbness in limbs, or worse, block blood circulation.
  • Rope also comes in various types, from soft cotton rope to thicker rope - a rigger needs to choose the right type of rope to ensure the play is both safe and exciting.

4. The Owner - Owner

What is an Owner?

An Owner is a type of Dom with a strong possessive nature, often in a 24/7 dominant relationship. The sub is usually apet, slave, or roles of "objectification" such asHuman Furniture(Object) orDoll(doll).

Characteristics:

  • Establish clear rules
  • Build a long-term behavior control system
  • Can be combined with collaring (wearing a collar symbolizing ownership).

For example:

The sub must ask for permission to go out, eat, or submit daily “reports.”

5. The Sadist

What is a Sadist?

A Sadist is someone who finds pleasure in causing pain or physical domination over a partner — with absolute consent.

Typically identified as a Sadist, the sub will often be a Masochist or Pain Slut. For someone who enjoys both sadism and masochism, the term will be Sadomasochist.

Characteristics:

  • Interest in spanking, whipping, wax play, needle play...
  • Focus on the feeling of power when creating pain and dominating the sub.
  • Aftercare is essential after a session.

Note

A Sadist is not an abuser. Consent, communication, and safewords are always at the core.

6. The Pleasure Dom

What is a Pleasure Dom?

A Pleasure Dom is a dom who derives joy from pleasing their sub. Unlike other doms, such as Masters or Sadists, a Pleasure Dom always ensures their partner feels comfortable, both physically and mentally.

Characteristics:

  • Understanding the desires of the sub and applying them to the play.
  • Maintaining a dominant spirit and ensuring control of the play in a way that the sub achieves the deepest pleasures they desire.
  • Often applying Edging (stopping stimulation before reaching orgasm) on oneself to enable the sub to achieve continuous orgasms.
  • Often combined with forms of Orgasm Control, such as Multiple Orgasm, Forced Orgasm, or Orgasm Denial.

7. Master/Mistress

What is a Master/Mistress?

A Master/Mistress is typically a Dom with a system of rules and a clear hierarchy of power. Suitable for a sub who desires complete submission like a Pet or Slave.

Characteristics:

  • Establishing absolute power
  • Managing all aspects of the relationship and the sub's life
  • May collar the sub to signify ownership and dominance.

For example

  • If the sub is a pet, the Master/Mistress will collar them, have a cage for the sub to stay in, and will also feed and care for the pet.
  • The sub can be a slave 24/7, staying home to manage the household, cook, and welcome the Master/Mistress home.

In summary

BDSM is not just about technique or the physical – it is also a journey of self-understanding. Each type of Dom has its own uniqueness, and there is no single "right way" to be a Dom. What matters is consent, connection, and the ability to care for one another.
